‘Do you know what I watch?’

There is hardly any book of John Berger’s that doesn’t include a few pages about animals. Both as a writer and as a visual artist, some of his most vivid insights concern non-human living things, ranging from mushrooms to eels, from insects to hounds. His lifelong reflection on the relationship between man and nature led him to listen, ever so carefully but without an ounce of anthropomorphism, to the voices of countless speechless creatures - that finally extended all the way to clouds or biological cells.

While animal life has become a major topic within Western society, this reading of "Do you know what I watch?" aims both at paying a tribute to John on his 100th birthday and at defeating any attempt to oversimplify his thought in present times.

Katya Berger Andreadakis

Katya Berger Andreadakis recently retired after a career in journalism, alternately as a film critic, as an editor for a women’s magazine and as a theatre critic for various Geneva based media. Besides translating into French a few of her father John Berger’s books, such as ‘And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos’, ‘King’ and ‘Here Is Where We Meet’, she also coauthored with him two dialogues around painters, namely Titian and Mantegna. She currently lives between Switzerland and Greece, where she is working on both her parents’ archives in the prospect of further publications.

Yves Berger

Yves Berger is a painter who lives and works in a small mountain village in the French alps. He grew-up amongst the peasant community and the company of the many artists regularly visiting his father John Berger. This specific context is the ground on which his artwork has grown and developed over the last 30 years. He has been using visual mediums such as drawing, painting, monoprint, etching and sculpture. Several of his writings have also been published in different countries.
